Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross
(Ritterkreuz Des Eisernen Kreuz)
The Knights Cross was to be awarded to those who had performed deeds of exceptional personal
bravery, acting with initiative and resolve, or for displaying leadership, which was decisive in the success of an action
with the enemy.
However, it was also awarded for cumulative gallantry or distinguished service over extended
periods. E.g. pilots, u-boat commanders, tank commanders, etc.
The design followed that of the Iron Cross 2nd class, only slightly larger in size and to
be suspended from the neck on a 45mm wide ribbon.
The frame was to be in solid silver (usually marked 800 but examples marked 935 are known)
and the core enamelled iron although there are examples, especially in the early years that do not follow these specifications.
Early examples can be found with frames of silver plate or from neusilber. Some can be found with cores made from zinc or
brass. This use of inappropriate materials was eventually removed so that the original specifications were followed (real
silver frame and iron core).
